With the number of beds needed in hospitals declining due to shorter stays, hospitals are looking for new uses for the space previously devoted to inpatient bedrooms.
NYU Downtown Hospital, an affiliated hospital of the New York University Medical System serving the lower Manhattan community, asked Magnusson Architecture and Planning (in conjunction with Norman Rosenfeld Architects) to design a conversion of two floors of inpatient beds into a state-of-the-art ambulatory care facility that would be used to serve the primary care needs of Wall Street and Chinatown communities. This conversion required complete gut renovations of the old floors to make room for new exam rooms, offices, waiting rooms, and support spaces.
