Whitman Court is a unique project in Brooklyn, New York being developed by the Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC) in partnership with the Brooklyn Public Library and Community Roots Charter School (CRCS). Magnusson Architecture and Planning is engaged by FAC to plan and design this innovative new building type that combines a public library and charter school.
The project site is currently occupied by a 10,500 square foot branch of the Brooklyn Public Library which is in tremendous need of capital repairs. FAC will negotiate a lease of the site from the City and then both the Library and CRCS will lease from FAC. MAP has conducted preliminary zoning and feasibility analysis, including preliminary program design for both the Charter School and the library, as well as for an addition of senior housing units to the site.
Through sharing the site, the Brooklyn Public Library will be able to get the renovations it so sorely needs. Once the new building is completed, the library will become a unique resource for the 35,000 square foot Charter School, while maintaining its service to the surrounding community.
