Located in a rapidly changing, mixed-use area of Bushwick, this NYSERDA Building of Excellence award winner will offer 94 units of affordable senior housing. Designed to meet passive house standards, the building is capped by a solar canopy, which ensures low energy use and superior indoor air quality through highly efficient mechanical systems, a robust building envelope, and meticulous material choices.

To fit an architectur­ally diverse context, the building’s exterior is clad in a contemporary and sustainable fiber-reinforced concrete rainscreen. Varied setbacks from the street create areas for outdoor seating at the entrance, as well as landscaping, which in turn, provides privacy for first-floor apartments. Large windows bring daylight into the apartments, circulation spaces and expanded elevator lobbies with lounges on every floor. Rheingold Senior Housing will also include a large rear garden in close prox­imity to the community room and lobby.
